Smooth Sailin’

Smooth Sailing

Smooth Sailin’

The overall dimensions of “Smooth Sailin” are roughly 4&1/2′ Wide X 5′ Long X 6″ thick.  The drum is made from elk hide. The frame is done in kiln dried cherry with the carved feathers done in curly cherry.  The artwork is stipple done in black India ink.  The stipple is done with several sizes of technical pens, each putting out only one dot at a time.  This art form is a long process but overall very much worth it.  The detail you can get in this type of medium is wonderful.

The is a piece that is very symbolic to the client who commissioned it.  When I do pieces like this I interview the client for as long as it takes. I take this information and let it seed itself for a time until I can clearly envision the piece.  And then I begin. The medium that I create in varies with each client.
